                                   Transportation Director

 

Qualifications:  

1. Bachelor’s Degree in transportation management or business administration preferred.

2. Five years of training or experience in management, transportation supervision, routing, budgeting and computers. systems experience or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.  3.Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

Reports to:  Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent overseeing the Transportation Department

 

Supervises: Transportation Department staff

 

Job Goal:  To provide leadership in managing, directing, and coordinating safe, efficient, and economical operation of the school and activity bus transportation system.

 

Performance Responsibilities:

 

  1. Follows all rules, policies, and procedures of Carteret County Public Schools, along with state and federal regulations pertaining to transportation of students.

 

  1. Maintains and operates a safe, fiscally sound, and efficient transportation operations.

 

  1. Manages the preventive maintenance program for school buses and other system vehicles.

 

  1. Oversees BSIP (Business Systems Improvement Project) program, which accounts for inventory available for use, repair parts and labor charged to vehicles, vehicle mileages and when each is due for maintenance, and a repair history for each vehicle.

 

  1. Oversees the routing of school buses, school bus stop locations and assignment of students to school buses.

 

  1. Oversees transportation for students with special needs.

 

  1. Monitors each school’s compliance with North Carolina state laws and regulations related to school buses and makes recommendations accordingly.

 

  1. Coordinates the use of charter bus policy.

 

  1. Assists school administrators with school bus discipline matters as needed.

 

  1. Recommends transportation personnel to be hired disciplined, discharged or promoted.

 

  1. Develops on-going in-service program for school bus drivers, mechanics, and staff covering safety, student management, care of equipment, and interpersonal skills.

 

  1. Oversees the development of school bus safety and education programs for schools.

 

  1. Manages the selection, training, certification of fitness and competence, and termination of bus drivers.

 

  1. Manages the drug and alcohol-testing program for all safety sensitive positions.

 

  1. Investigates and reports accidents involving school system vehicles.

 

  1. Assists the Superintendent with decisions regarding school opening and closing during periods of inclement weather.

 

  1. Develops and manages the transportation budget.

 

  1. Communicates with Department of Transportation on roads, bridges, signs, etc.

 

  1. Directs the preparation and submission of all transportation reports.

 

  1. Remains available nights and weekends, in case of school bus and activity bus problems.

 

  1. Holds and maintains a valid North Carolina Driver’s license.

 

  1. Other duties assigned by the Superintendent.

Terms of Employment:                     Twelve month year/Contract/FLSA Exempt

 

Starting Salary and/or Grade:        Salary established by the Carteret County Board of Education

 

Evaluation:                 Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with board policy.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrates functional knowledge of computerized routing systems in student transportation.
  • Demonstrates functional knowledge of laws, policies, and procedures related to transporting school-age children.
  • Demonstrates general knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair of light and heavy vehicles.
  • Demonstrates functional knowledge of budget preparation and implementation based on funding efficiency formula.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to communicate with school personnel, employees, parents, and central office staff.
  • Ability to follow detailed written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignment.
  • Physical ability (able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally) and dexterity to perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, such as, walk, lift, stoop, stand, grasp, kneel, crouch and key requiring repetitive motions.
